I somehow imagined Lorca looking at the sunrise at the Coney Island beach after a wild night of exploration into the cityscape, and he was surrounded by shells, crabs and other surreal creatures. The crab image inspired me to write a short crab canon that became the middle of the piece. Look at the incredible animated video of the famous J.S.Bach “The Musical Offering” below.
For this song was hearing a medium tempo groove that would be in between 12/8 and 3/4 and have a backbeat-ish vibe. Inevitably another Sting song called “I Burn For You” came to mind... I think it’s really interesting how the songs we obsess with when we're teenagers become powerful musical references as adults, but that might be a subject for another post.
Harmonically and melodically this may be the most Spanish-sounding song of the collection, perhaps describing the loneliness and melancholy of the Spaniard in the New York wilderness.
